LSA 49 Dives Deep into Civic Engagement
LSA 49: #NowtoNext – A Deep Dive into Civic Engagement in San Antonio
LSA 49’s Civic Engagement Day was a hands-on dive into how civic leadership shapes San Antonio—now and in the future. Through conversations with leaders, behind-the-scenes tours, and firsthand experiences with changemakers, we embraced #NowtoNext: understanding today to shape tomorrow.

A Morning of Inspiration and Reflection
The day began with a warm welcome over breakfast, accompanied by moving performances from performing arts students who received higher education scholarships through The Majestic Empire Foundation, setting the tone for a day rooted in community impact. San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, LSA alum, followed with an inspiring address on the critical role civic engagement plays in shaping the city’s trajectory, reinforcing the importance of active leadership at every level. Participants then had the rare opportunity to tour the historic Majestic Theatre, where they explored its legacy and its present-day role in civic engagement. Discussions highlighted the work of The Majestic Empire Foundation, showcasing how nonprofits serve as pillars of community connection and transformation.
Engaging with Future Leadership
In a pivotal moment of the day, LSA 49 attendees participated in an informal mayoral forum. Candidates shared their personal journey into civic leadership, their vision for San Antonio, and their insights on how leaders can contribute to meaningful change. The discussion offered invaluable perspectives on both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the city. Before breaking for lunch, participants reflected on the Majestic Theatre’s history, particularly the role community-led protests in the 1970s played in integrating the once-segregated balcony. This moment underscored the power of collective action in shaping a more inclusive and equitable city.

Diverse Perspectives on Civic Infrastructure
The afternoon was split into two immersive learning experiences:
● Hemisfair Park Tour – The first group engaged in a guided tour of Hemisfair Park, led by visionary minds behind its transformation, including Andres Andujar (LSA Class 27) and Melissa Robinson. They explored the public-private partnerships that sustain the park, its impact on the community, and a philosophy that guides its development—”If it doesn’t bring joy, we don’t do it.”
● Bexar County Detention Center Tour – The second group visited Bexar County Detention Center, gaining a stark and eye-opening perspective on the challenges faced by civil services and the broader community. The tour provided critical insights into the complexities of the justice system, public safety, and rehabilitation efforts. Participants engaged in discussions about the center’s evolving role, including its response to the growing mental health crisis, the daily realities of inmates and staff, and ongoing efforts to implement education, reform, and support services to help ease inmate’s transition back into society.
A Commitment to Serving the Community
After reconvening, participants toured Haven for Hope, San Antonio’s groundbreaking hub for addressing homelessness. Immersed in its campus, services, and mission, they saw firsthand how holistic support transforms lives. But they didn’t stop at observation. LSA 49 members took action, donating nearly 300 pairs of socks, 70 pairs of underwear, and numerous bags of clothing and shoes—essential items for those in need. They also rolled up their sleeves, providing the supplies and assembling over 200 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches—a simple yet vital meal for individuals facing hunger. Their contributions exemplified the power of collective effort in making an immediate, tangible impact.

A 360° View of San Antonio’s Future
The day concluded with a social at the Tower of the Americas, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the city that LSA 49 will spend the year learning about and investing in. With San Antonio’s skyline stretching in every direction, participants reflected on their experiences, the leaders they met, and the responsibility they hold in shaping the city’s future.
